Jenkins Building Materials, Inc. of Polk, Missouri began in 1964. Two brothers, Bennie and Ernest Jenkins, built a metal building. This building was used to store storm windows, which the brothers were selling and installing at the time, and was also used as a shop to work on farm equipment.
A local Hickory County resident saw the building and asked the brothers if they would build him a hay barn using the same type of construction. The brothers agreed and later that same year their first building was completed. Local residents were skeptical as to the viability of a building of this type. It was constructed with metal pipe, but the building proved to be well constructed and has stood the test of time, as it is still standing and being used to this day.
The business continued to grow with many hay barns, shop buildings, sale barns, fire stations, and garages being built over the next 11 years. In 1975, the company expanded into selling and constructing pre-engineered all steel buildings, which continues to this day.
The company, now under the ownership of Ernest's son, Garland Jenkins, continues to sell residential, farm, and commercial buildings. These include convenience and retail stores, seed houses, mini-storages, gymnasiums, restaurants, dairy barns, animal confinements, riding arenas, churches, schools, senior centers, and warehouses throughout the Midwest.
The company expanded from the original building, which is still being used, to include an 8,000 square foot manufacturing building, built in 1976, and an 8,000 square foot warehouse constructed in 1992. A larger office was added in 1999.
Since 1964 the company has sold and continues to sell a variety of building materials, including: residential and commercial 26 and 29 gauge painted and galvalume metal panels, metal building components and complete clear span all steel building packages from 24 ft. wide to 250 ft. plus. Multi-level buildings are available with both single and double slope roofs.
In 1975, Jenkins Building Materials partnered with Alliance Steel, Inc. in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to provide customers with pre-engineered commercial buildings. Engineered stamped blue prints are available on all pre-engineered buildings. The blue prints help lower some insurance policies. Alliance Steel buildings will meet any state, county, and city building codes. This long lasting relationship has been beneficial to both companies and their customers.
